When I coach new clients who want to start a freelance writing business or a writing career, I usually advise them to specialize in at least a couple of areas.
I tell them to think of it this way – You wouldn’t go to the dentist to deliver your baby. You’d go to an obstetrician, someone who specializes in delivering babies.
The same kind of thinking is true with people who are looking for writers.
They want to find the best writer for the job at hand.
Usually that is someone who specializes in the type of materials(s) they need written – not someone who says they will write anything and everything for anyone and everyone.
Recently, I recorded this writers’ workshop with Nancy I. Sanders.
Nancy talks about specializing and how it can help you build your writing career and make more money.
There are some other surprising perks to specializing, too.
Ask yourself these 3 questions:
- Is your writing career at a standstill?
- Does it feel ho-hum and lack spark?
- Does it seem like you’re spinning your wheels and going nowhere?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, now is a good time to jazz it up.
Now is a good time to focus your energy to build the momentum you need to blast forward as a writer.
Now is a good time to specialize.
