Every weekday morning, members of the Working Writer’s Club receive an email from me called The Morning Nudge, with tips about writing and the business of writing. Today’s Nudge was all about creating your unique brand as a freelance writer or best-selling author.
If you’re struggling to build a thriving career as a freelance writer – or you can’t seem to sell many copies of your book if you’re an author – then you probably haven’t created a strong brand for yourself or your book.
To create your brand, make a list of all the things that set you (and your book, if you’re an author) apart from every other freelance writer or author.
For example, what products and services do you specialize in as a freelance writer?
What makes your book different from all the other books on the market?
As a freelance writer, if you simply offer to write anything and everything for anyone and everyone, you’re not building a brand based on anything unique you have to offer. Not only that, you probably aren’t regarded as an expert in your field. Instead, you’re a generalist. And, as everyone knows, when people want to pay the BIG bucks for products or services, they don’t seek a generalist; they look for a leading expert.
As an author, if you can’t think of anything that sets your book apart from all other books about the same subject, you’re not giving people a real reason to want to buy and read your book. Obviously, if a traditional publisher published your book, this publisher must have seen something unique about the book. Now it’s up to you to focus on that as you promote your book.
Here are some questions to ask yourself if you’re trying to build a strong brand as a freelance writer or author:
1. What sets me apart from other writers?
2. How am I already using my unique qualities or services to create my brand as a freelance writer or author?
3. What can I start doing today to build a stronger brand for myself as a writer or author?
If you need help answering these questions, join the Working Writer’s Club. Next week in our monthly LIVE teleclass, we’ll be discussing how to build a strong brand.
