Answers to Your Questions about Freelance Writing

Here’s a question that came in last week from Karen. She says:

I’ve had 10 years experience editing college papers (undergrad and postgrad) which produced mostly As. Would this qualifiy me for offer this as a service?

Karen, this would certainly qualify you to start offering this as a service through you own website and/or blog. But many of the companies that look for writers with this type of editing experience also want the writer to have an advanced degree. I guess they figure if the writer has experience writing papers for his/her own degree(s) then this writer knows exactly what to look for when editing the college papers of other students. So, if you also have an advanced degree, be sure to list this on your site with your bio or other information about your professional background.

Here are a couple of things I would caution you about if you want to edit college papers, though:

First, please don’t take a job with any of the companies that actually WRITE term papers and other college materials FOR students. Be careful that you don’t get sucked in by one of these companies.

Second, do really enjoy editing college papers?

If so, then I’d say go ahead and actively promote this type of thing as part of your writing services.

However, if you did this type of work in the past ONLY to earn money, and you really didn’t enjoy it, then I’d let it go in favor of developing your freelance writing career based on the type(s) of work you are most passionate about. It might take a bit longer to make this happen. But, in the long run, you don’t want to trade the writing life of your dreams for work you don’t enjoy.
