How to Attract the High Paying Writing Jobs!

I had fun speaking at our local Partners in Crime meeting last night. I appreciate the group having me as their speaker this month. It was a great group of people to present to and to get to know.

Now…since I had to cancel last night’s Build Your Business Write Q&A teleclass, where I answer previously submitted questions about building a freelance writing career, I’d like to answer one of those questions that was submitted for last night’s teleclass.

Here’s the question (it was submitted by Kristie):

How do I attract the high paying writing jobs and not get bogged down with small paying assignments that just eat up my time?

That’s a good question, Kristie. And one that many freelance writers have.

When you ask how do you “attract” the high paying writing jobs instead of the small paying assignments, the main thing is to look at the types of jobs you’re actually applying for.

My guess is, you keep “attracting” only the low paying assignments that eat up all your time because those are the only jobs you’re applying for. Right?

So, if you want to attract the high paying jobs, you need to stop applying for all the low paying jobs and START applying for the high paying jobs.

But that probably brings up another question from you, which is – How do I FIND the high paying jobs?

There are many ways to find high paying jobs. One is to keep searching the job boards where you’re finding those low paying jobs. There are some high paying jobs there, too. But you may have to search a bit harder to find them. You also have to be willing to think beyond what you’ve usually felt you were qualified to apply for. Don’t be afraid to stretch and grow and stick your neck out to apply for things that seem just a bit beyond your usual assignments.

Another way to find the high paying assignments is to network with writers who are already landing higher paying jobs. Join some listservs for writers and visit a few forums for freelance writers. Simply lurk for a while and find out what these writers are doing. After a few days, introduce yourself and ask for some suggestions from these writers as to how you can start breaking in with higher paying assignments. Most writers are more than willing to help their fellow writers. I bet you’ll get all sorts of helpful suggestions.

Also, be willing to spend some time and money to learn more about finding the types of jobs you want. Then, be READY to accept those types of jobs. Learn how to find online content jobs, for example, or find out how to write for some of the larger companies that need writers. There are many insider tips to learn that will help you break in with these types of markets.

But, the main thing, Kristie, is to start BELIEVING you’re worthy of those higher paying writing assignments, and then be willing to go after them. Honestly evaluate your writing skills. Do you really feel your work is top-notch so you can compete for those higher paying assignments? If not, sign up for a writing course or workshop to improve your skills. If your queries aren’t landing the higher paying assignments, find someone who knows how to write a winning query and have that person evaluate your queries for a while and give you tips for improving them. You’ll probably have to pay someone to do this for you. But it will be worth the money.

Make up your mind to take your writing career to the next level.

Once you make that commitment, you’ll be sick and tired of those jobs that pay peanuts. And you won’t search for or accept that type of work anymore. You’ll start “attracting” the high paying jobs that you know and feel you truly deserve.

Happy writing!
